But having now thought about it like that, that duality to his character is probably why I like him (besides that "pale, skinny and slightly-weird-looking" are traits that I like in characters).
He comes across as mean-looking, but he's actually friendly. Even Milo says in the postgame that whilst he looks scary, he's good at looking after people. He cheers on all his team equally when you battle him (and because he doesn't Dynamax, he doesn't have an ace), but he doesn't believe him himself, instead telling you he's not a good Gym Leader. He cares about Marnie enough to set up a cheer squad for her, but isn't above being a sassy troll if he gets the oppurtunity. He's a contradiction in himself and I love it.
