They kept the same barebones plot and geographically uninteresting region. Since world ending plots and regions that had deserts and icefields and volcanoes were the norm at that point, it felt boring by comparison.

It's using the slow as fuck gen 4 engine and it's infested with nupokemonisms like forced tutorials and railroading. You're better off playing Crystal, which also has better music instead of HGSS's tryhard noisy remixes.

I meant a Gen II Pokemon obviously. I didn't want to use Kanto Pokemon again. If you didn't start with Typhlosion you had nothing until legendaries/post-game.

You can't catch those before post-game in Gold and Silver in Safari.
In HG/SS you can get Murkrow and Larvitar but not Houndour, so your only fire type from gen 2 before post game that isn't a starter/legendary is Slugma.

That's a fair point, there's plenty to bitch about but there's also some nice breaks in these games, definitely wasn't complaining when I was able to catch both scyther and pinsir after the second gym.
