Now that Surf is no longer required in the main story, give me just one (1) reason to pick the Water starter.

Did you NOT give Surf to your water starter? Are you okay? The only one it's even slightly questionable for is Feraligatr in Gen 4 where you have physical water STAB as an option.

Water type starters have typically good coverage and can learn Ice Beam or Ice Punch depending on their best stat.
Fire type starters are valuable because of how uncommon fire types can be, this was even the main reason for picking Chimchar in DP.
Grass type starters, sadly, get the short end of the stick and the arguments for picking them are strictly subjective, unless we're talking Gen I Bulbasaur and its early Leech Seed and 95% crit Razor Leaf.

Torterra and Decidueye are solid in game. Torterra gets EQ for free which is huge. And Decidueye has a pretty versatile ingame movepool. Sceptile is good in the remakes.

I ran with the owl in USUM and it was pretty based. Keep in mind that "in game" means the piss-easy story mode and not some Smogon battle.
