Flying is objectively the best typing overall, every well-built team should have a flying type.
The only one that comes that close to being mandatory is steel.

The problem with those is that you're giving up another ability/item.
Flying gets a Ground immunity for free in addition to an item/ability.

In singles a true ground immunity is necessary on every team, they almost always get defog which is a very important utility move, and their weaknesses are relatively rare.
Offensive flying types generally have few answers because defensive electric types don't exist besides Zapdos and Rotom forms and they usually have coverage for steels.
