The Champion tournament was 3 first, then 4 more fights, then a boss fight, a gigamax boss fight, then the Champions fight. BTFO out of what Dennis could do. Also implying you wouldn't just spam revives and full restores between Elite 4 members so GF is just saving you time and cash.

E4 is lame and so is a tournament in which you rebattle the fucking gym leaders.
The best way would be a tournament in which you would face special NPCs you met during side quests across your journey.

The tournament format for deciding the champion honestly makes more sense, but I like the idea that its a highly contested spot by people other then gym leaders. I always thought that the gym leaders were there to test up and coming trainers and facilitate battles in their area, not necessarily to be the best of the best

Why can't it just be both? Tournament where you refight trainers you've met along the journey but at their absolute best with 6 Pokemon teams and game GIMMICK, but the semi-finals is all about you fighting the ELITES before you fight the champ.
