I've been thinking about it for a while now and have wondered what it is about Pokemon that can pretty much always make me play it for so long after beating the game. I agree with that post and still really enjoyed the post game in gens 4, 5, and 7 when there were completely new places to go to after the Elite Four, but my favorite gen is Gen III which has none of that. I think that the answer is the amount of customization and difference you can have in movesets in an attempt to try and make something work which I enjoy the most. Battle Tower this gen is good but it hardly is a substitute for the Frontier or something. Since things are super accessible now like natures and bottle caps I've spent 120+ hours after the Champion Cup raising Pokemon and battling. I think I have almost 4 boxes full of viable Pokemon.

It had Cerulean Cave, and, in the vastly superior remakes, the Sevii Islands.

During the golden age of Pokemon (2003 - 2012), the postgame content only got better and better, as did the games. Then X/Y turned the series to shit.

Even the remakes of the golden era games have cut content. I expect the Diamond/Pearl remakes to not have the post-game island and replace Fantina with fucking Fairy types.

Only relevant ones are Battle Tower (brought forward from Crystal and now including double battles) so you can argue that it's improved. Such a shame that every other gen after doesn't do more, the Frontier should've been a staple with varying facilities each gen.

Kanto isn't post game. It's the act 2, but the E4 rebattles after getting the Kanto badges is the real endgame. The only postgame it has is Mt Silver.

Johto and gen 2 Kanto are too small to be their own regions. Both of them combined are pretty much equivalent to a single region and I would hardly call them adequate postgame compared to something like Battle Tower.

A pointless time sink seems subjective. I never got into Battle Frontier or PWT due to thinking it was a pointless time sink, but I've been pretty addicted to Max Raids. I think what is good post game is rather subjective. Take away Battle Frontier and all you really have left is a a few routes that don't add much except Pokemon locked behind post-Elite 4. I will agree finding Legends was better in old games but that's a pretty small part of the overall game. Sw/Sh still has Gym Battle rematches, incorporated into the Champions Tournament, a Battle Tower that supports singles and doubles and a healthy and lively online scene that, why do you want a Battle Tower when you can battle other people with a snap of your fingers?

Not him, but why would you want less stuff to do? I'm personally not asking for a replacement but rather an upgrade. The online may be active but there aren't enough modes for it and the gen 8 Battle Tower is a downgrade from most of the others we've had.

What we really should have are more types of battle modes for online (monotype, inverse, triples, rotation, etc) while simultaneously giving us different types of battle facilities that offer both single player challenges and online incorporation.

Because competitive is worse than it's ever been, and no one sane plays comp on cart when Pokemon Showdown exists. I beat Sword in 12 hours, did the 1 hour post-game, and never touched it again.

S/S simply have awful postgame. Worse than even Kanto, which at least had legendary hunts and Cerulean Cave. Max raids add nothing of value to the game, unlike PWT or Battle Frontier, which give you a reason to actually raise a proper team on cart, and offer replayability even without online.

There's nothing wrong with having more options, but the removal of options doesn't make a game instantly bad, unless it's a principals argument, which I don't humor. There's more they could do, and they experimented in the past but the new stuff they're experimenting with, Max Raids, Dynamax, appeal to my play style way more, while Battle Frontier and gimmick battles were a waste of my time. Having them all in would be nice, but not having them all in isn't going to piss me off also. Why would it if the main game is still fun to myself?

No, Kanto is there to make up for the fact that Johto is so small and empty. Kanto isn't post-game, it's just the 2nd half of the game. By the time you're done with Kanto, you get a full Pokemon game's worth of content, and then Mt Silver is the only post-game content since you need to beat Kanto to get it.

It helps when you realize what Pokemon is. When D/P came out, when I was in my late teens and have been playing since R/B, I just figured Pokemon is a simple and dumb JRPG that I got into, but I started getting into better RPG's like Disgaea, Tales of and recently, Xenoblade and Dragon Quest. That's why the backlash to Sw/Sh confused me and people like you seem to odd to me. There's way better games that have RPG mechanics and I just keep up with Pokemon cause I do enjoy a nice dumb game before bed inbetween playing better games. I'm sorry you can't get into modern Pokemon, but better games do exist and I'd rather just encourage people to leave what they don't like. I hate the direction Disgaea went and I haven't played since 3, it's not hard to drop a series.

Most peoples' biggest complaint with Unova is how much content is packed into the few route you get before the post-game. Every town/route is punctuated with a story cutscene, and you finish the game at around level 50 - 55-ish, meanwhile you finish Johto at around level 40, and Kanto at around 55 - 60-ish. That means that the end of Kanto is roughly equivalent to the end of Unova, Sinnoh, etc.

What'll you do when no one plays the online anymore? 10 years down the line when the Switch online is a thing of the past, what content will S/S have? The 15 hour campaign and...?

I just replayed Platinum, which is over 10 years old, and even with none of the online content I got 300 hours out of it trying to complete the Battle Frontier and the rest of the postgame content. S/S can't even get 1/20th that content, and it costs $20 more.

I don't understand this way of playing video games. Personally, when I find a game I like, I play it for hours and hours and hours and then replay it again slightly differently. To hear that some people would buy a game just to play it for <20 hours and never touch it again seems insane. If it's not worth investing serious amounts of time in, what made it worth it to play in the first place? Why buy something that only offers you a month's worth of enjoyment? That's how I look at it, at least. I'll never understand the people who don't care about postgame content.

He makes a great point for VGC tryhards who just play the games for the grind but Pokémon really should be a better role-playing game at this point after 20 years.
