Megas had the problem in that only allowing one of them means you're severely limited in how many of them you really end up using. Like, I think Mega-Steelix is cool, but he's not so cool that I'm going to go out of my way to build a team around him. Additionally, the games were never balanced around using Megas so they'd be relegated to post-game. I think it'd be better if they made more standard evolutions a la Gen IV than bringing back Megas

I think the point he was trying to make is that Megas aren't inherently necessary to make a shitmon decent; its just the only relatively consistent way so far. The fact that Butterfree does have at least some usage indicates that the Gigantamax form did improve it at least to a decent extent as there are plenty of "shiny new forms" that don't see any real usage, but I do think limiting these forms to only having one unique move inhibits how much a Gigantamax form can benefit an oldmon to a significant degree

I can name dozens of shitmons that became usable because they got new moves or abilities, meanwhile what Pokemon actually became worth using because of megashit? They changed stats around for Mega Alakazam, and they also nerfed Parental Bond.

Not hard to imagine. That said Blastoise is not a top-tier threat unless it's carrying both. Without Shell Smash it's a bad Mega, and without Blastoisinite it's worse than Cloyster as a Smasher because it's so damn weak.

It should work out in 6v6 Singles, at least. Mega Blastoise was RU last gen. I know Shell Smash Blastoise isn't going to be some kind of OU worldbeater, but high RU in a world without Megas doesn't seem like too much of a stretch, nor does it ending up in UU's basement due to bad players like the Jolteons and Donphans of generations gone by. Obviously it's too early to say for sure, but I would not be surprised if Shell Smash brings Blastoise higher than the Mega did.

That's fair, though Shell Smash does change what it's competing with quite a bit since instead of going up against other Spinners and bulky Water-type tanks, it now has to prove itself against other mid-low-tier setup sweepers. I suspect being able to viably run physical sets (base 83 Attack versus base 85 Special Attack, Liquidation as a STAB versus Scald or the ever risky Hydro Pump, ability to run EQ) will be the deciding factor in where Blastoise ends up this time around. That and being faster than Choice Scarfed base 120s after a Smash.

Mimikyu was nerfed because of Battle Spot Singles, not VGC, and Aegislash's nerfs are a slap on the wrist that won't really change much in Doubles.

It's barely a nerf, the only difference is Pokemon with a few specific abilities won't be affected and it triggers Rattled. However - it will still apply to Pokemon without those abilities, Pokemon with those abilities are generally unviable and ones that are viable will want to run different abilities. Ironically, the two Pokemon this would actually be relevant to are both Megas (Gallade and Lopunny)

Blastoise got Shell Smash in the game gen it lost its mega.
The only way for it to have both is in Natdex OU, which is literal fanfic. And it is pretty good there, for what it's worth.
