Go encountered a Mew and he wanted to catch it. Pikachu was a Pichu raised by a Kangaskhan until the Kangaskhan couldn't take care of him anymore. Pichu evolved and left.
Ash goes to visit a professor in Vermillion City, who has opened a new laboratory there. He meets a kid named Go, who wants to capture every Pokemon and Mew. Ash and Go want to live at the laboratory. Delia decides to leave Mr. Mime there to watch over Ash.
Ash and Go initially have difficulty getting along at first when they are both sent on their first research assignment, but they eventually cooperate with one another. Both characters get sent to Wyndon in Galar to investigate Dynamax. Go meets a wild Scorbunny there, who takes a liking to him and follows the group to the Wild Area. Scorbunny wants to be caught by Go, but Go refuses, as he wants to start out with Mew. Go saves Scorbunny from a Gigantamax Snorlax, and Go catches Scorbunny as his first Pokemon despite his reservations earlier. Go then proceeds to catch all 12 Bug-type Pokemon from Kanto in the Vermillion Forest.
Ash and Go are sent to the Hoenn Battle Frontier to compete in a tournament there. Ash uses Mr. Mime (which is revealed to have been his all along) and Pikachu, while Go uses Scorbunny and Scyther. Ash wins the tournament. Go catches three Wurmple, hoping to get Silcoon and Cascoon out of the deal, and a Taillow.
Ash and Go get sent to Snowpoint City to investigate an ice drifting race. Go catches a Mantyke and a Tentacool. Ash and Go go to Tin Tower in Ecruteak City to investigate Ho-Oh. They fail to see Ho-Oh, but Go catches a Sentret, a Misdreavus, and a Stantler.
