I played both HGSS and Crystal for the first time last year (I'm a Gen 3 zoomer who stopped with Diamond, so I missed both sets of Johto games as a kid).
All I can really say is Crystal looks gorgeous, the sprites are amazing, the soundtrack is comfy af and it makes for the best 'retro' experience of Pokemon since Gen 1 looks like total ass. The only thing I really miss is abilities.
HGSS also looks nice (better than grey sinnoh anyway) and adds a bunch of loveable shit (like obviously following Pokemon, the Voltorb flip game was fun, Pokeathalon was a a great timewaster, etc) and QoL stuff and was cozy as hell in its own special way.

Both games are pretty much the pinnacle of their 'era' except for the fact that JOHTO IS SUCH A BLAND UNFUN GARBAGE REGION HOLY SHIT

Except they're much uglier than the originals (both the overworld and the sprites) and didn't even fix the poor Pokemon distribution/difficulty GSC had. All they did was throw in a couple Easter eggs and carry over QoL improvements already in DPPT. Crystal Clear or Polished Crystal, despite their flaws, are much better "remakes" than HGSS

The only gen that added a substantial amount of QoL that’s actually worth a shit is gen 8. HGSS still has fucking HMs and one use TMs for fuck’s sake. It’s the same fucking game as gen 2 yet somehow on a SLOWER feeling engine.
