Select Pokemon of similar species (cats with cats, dogs with dogs, birds with birds, etc.) can breed with each other and produce a special offspring.
It's the species of the mom, but it has visible characteristics from the dad. It also takes the dad's best 2 base stats and inherits the dad's ability (not his type).
If the mons evolve with different methods, the mon can undergo "mini-evolutions". So let's say you breed a Lucario with a Houndoom. You get a Riolu with Houndour characteristics. Level it up to level 24, and it becomes a Riolu with Houndoom characteristics. Level it up with high friendship in the day, and it becomes a Lucario with Houndour characteristics. Do both (not necessarily at the same time) and it becomes a Lucario with Houndoom characteristics.
There could also be special mons only available through cross-breeding, like breeding a Granbull and Stoutland gets you a new pitbull mon, or breeding a chicken Pokemon and a snake Pokemon gets you a basilisk Pokemon.
