Why didn't they just give you the Mew as a reward for completing the dex?
Matter of fact, why don't they just give you the generation's mythical as a reward for completing the regional dex in every game?

The gen 1 beta assets show that it's a leftover from the Capsule Monsters era, where the truck was the instant transport method similar to Fly.

The anime definitely wasn't something they expected to happen when they made Red and Green. It wasn't until the 4th movie that the movies went full mythical shilling on purpose.

It was a last day addition. They literally crammed its data into the memory where the debugging tools used to be. The method(s) that load a Pokémon's data from the index- and Dex numbers were special cased to read data from there when trying to read Mew's data, that is how big of a hack this entire thing is.
It's a miracle it even worked.
Game Freak wouldn't have risked distributing that thing normally. Who even knows if it would function properly.

Little did they know that the Game was so horribly broken in other ways. The select glitch, most notably. If Pokémon hadn't become such a huge success, Nintendo would have never wanted to work with such an amateurish studio delivering something this broken even again.

The truck was actually from a town that later got deleted, the truck was just an easter egg that was kept in.

Mew was put in due to realizing there was just enough space left for more Pokemon after everything else had been finalized. Originally it was just supposed to be referenced for Mewtwo’s backstory. In fact, it was put in without any bug testing and was incredibly risky, mainly because the disassembly showed the code for Mew was added in a completely separate area than the other Pokemon (lines 23-25 of https://github.com/pret/pokered/blob/master/main.asm)

Enough with this stupid fucking meme. The game wasn't so broken that children playing it in the late 90s even fucking noticed. The 'brokenness' of it was only cataloged literal decades after the fact when super autists dissected it down to the last bit of code. Nintendo didn't think they were 'amateurs' at the time—it was a fucking marvel of programming that they fit all of that on a GB cart at all.

The point is that the vast, overwhelming majority of awful bugs are found under very specific conditions. Anybody playing the game normally is exceedingly unlikely to ever encounter them.

You don't know how broken red and green were. Yes, people noticed. All it took was to swap a Pokémon or item and then change your mind and then to press select in the wrong menu.
BAM! Instant brokenness. Immediately, your game was DONE.

You didn't need to know the cinnabar glitch or trainer fly or the Ditto glitch or anything advanced.

False, Cinnibar Island trades had a scientist give you an Electrode for a Raichu. Talking to him after the trade and he'd say "That pokémon you gave me went and evolved!" Raichu doesn't evolve by trade, biut in Jap Blue, that same scientist gives you a trade evo pokémon for another trade evo pokémon. Yellow's lab trades don't look for a trade evolution. Localisation team missed the significance of that trade and straight translated it for the Western release.

Hey in all seriousness though, if you do the Mew glitch in a 3DS copy of gen 1, can you transfer it to Pokebank and then transfer that to Home and later Sword/Shield?

Some people have told me you can, some others say the glitch Mew doesn't count as legit in Pokebank.
