People always criticize friendly rivals and ask for douche ones, but how much of an asshole can they be before it becomes insufferable? How do you think they'd screw up if they went too far the other direction?

wouldn't matter because the rivals gets beaten at the end of the game anyway. The problem with "friendly" rivals is that you hardly get any satisfaction from beating them since they're always sucking your dick anyway.

The problem is that pokemon are very short and linear narrative wise.

Lets take blue right, he's always a badge ahead of the player and is cocky, but he loses to you basically in every fight (I think you're allowed to lose a few but i dont remember). It doesn't make sense why he'd be cocky if he keeps losing, so if they wanted to fix it they would probably implement scripted fights where you CAN'T win.

I don't know how pokemon fans would react to this, it's a normal thing in other jrpgs it's never been done here.

The problem with friendly rivals is that they can easily end up pathetic. The friends in XY were three losers who couldn't stop sucking your dick and one person whom you almost felt bad for mind breaking throughout the game. I know some people hate Hau but I found he's somewhat mitigated by actually having a laid back attitude and having Gladion to contrast with. Hop is like the worst traits of Hau and Caleb/Serena mixed into one character who will not just shut the fuck up and leave you alone. Bede is a pretty bad way of doing a jerk rival since he's utterly pathetic as well. Barry and Hugh don't really suffer from these kinds of issues. Cheren and Bianca are similarly not bad, but they're brought down by half baked and overly wordy character arcs that feel stiff as a board. Otherwise the idea behind each one isn't bad.

A good rival is someone that gives you the incentive to beat them. Hop is "you'll steamroll his team anyway", Bede you could just ignore him completely and it wouldn't matter shit. However Blue is good because he's the smug cocksucker you want to put right back to his place with one battle, and Barry is the energetic friend who's always up for a challenge whether you like it or not.

They could always play with what the player knows about the game mechanics a little to make them interesting. Take N for example - he never really has a set team and always uses wild Pokémon in the area to fight you and winning a match against you was never really his goal.

A rival who is always seen with say a fully evolved pseudo but never uses it in matches against you instead battling you with a couple mons that they’ve clearly just caught recently would have reason to remain cocky and have it remain believable.
