Bug/Grass is terrible, but how much worse than Ground/Rock? They are quintessensial coverage types but the mons themselves tend to be pure shit.

I know, but they are also moves almost every other pokemon get, while very few mons of that typing (if any) are actually good. You're better off using EdgeQuake with almost every other typing.

Is Leavanny as bad as Parasect? You can't even pretend like Parasect is useful in a RBY/FRLG run, there's just nothing redeeming about it. Spore isn't worth a dead weight.

And believe me I tried so so many times to use this thing.

I tried to use Parasect in Heartgold. Literally couldn't manage to do anything for any of the major fights.

Leavanny instead is super-useful both in BW and BW2.

This. Its hidden ability is also Damp, which prevents the opponent from using self-destruct/explosion. It also gets Worry Seed for checking abilities. Its effect renders Spore useless though. Very useful all-rounder for catching. It's a niche.

Aesthetically, it's my favorite type combination and I want a non-event, non-legendary pokemon with this type badly. But neither of the types gain anything particularly useful and only really get two 4x weaknesses out of it.

I don't think you guys understand. It also learns Brick Break, which not only has a respectable base power of 75 with excellent fighting coverage, but removes Light Screen and Reflect. When you level it to 100, it can defeat most Pokemon in the Elite Four!

A Shell Shield move. Kinda like how Aegislash's King's Shield turns it to defensive mode, Shell Shield would turn it into Rock type until it uses a damaging move. I just came up with that, but I like it.

rock/fire resists Fire, Bug, Flying, Ice, Normal, and Poison. bug, normal, and poison aren't terrible common, neither is flying desu. quad weakness to water & ground, and also weak to rock and fighting? yeah, you might be right and rock/fire is worse defensively

I think both are somewhat equal. Both have lot of trash mons but both have good dual types that make them great type combos. Bug has no good mono type which puts grass up ahead.

If Appletun had better base stats it could make it work very well since it can form oddly good combos with it's weird resistances that often can cover a lot of ally meta mons weakness. It seamlessly can cover Corvi/Ferro/Excadrill a well as Toxapex.

Ground/Rock is a mid tier combination at worst, offensively it is godlike and defensively it still has notable resistances to work it. Rhyperior is so bulky and Solid Rock helps it so much that it only cares about quadruple weaknesses.

The only truly bad quality of Fire/Bug is the quadruple Rock weakness and Heavy Duty Boots circumvents that. Even Centiskorch has found some success.

Resistances are generally more important than having few to no weaknesses which is why poison/dark is better. At least when it comes to being a better offensive typing as normal is a shitty stab and being immune to normal is useless in most games

I'd argue that Dark/Normal is even worse than Grass/Bug. All Dark gains from the Normal typing is immunity to a type it already resists and STAB normal moves at the cost of a 4x fighting weakness. It's almost a complete downgrade from mono dark.

That's a much bigger deal for types like Normal/Fighting, where six types resist fighting so having neutral coverage that hits all of them is a big deal. Dark is only resisted by three types, none of which have enough other resistances to make covering them difficult, so you're usually better off just carrying something like Poison coverage to hit switch-ins. The Normal STAB doesn't really matter much. Especially now that Return is gone.
