I had an interesting thought about this the other day. What if the whole reason the starters were kept monotype was related to Hop congratulating you every time you land a supereffective hit? Think about it, they obviously wanted to encourage new players to master the type matchups, so if your starter and Hop's starter never develop a secondary typing, then it never gets more complicated than "grass > water > fire > grass". And it would explain why gen 8 was oddly so full of monotypes in the first place.

Yes. There was no need for the design to go to the lengths it did to convey the drummer theme when more natural and appealing methods of achieving the same thing were available. It is anthropomorphism for the sake of it.

What I hate about them is how toyish they are.
I know mons have been plastic and toy-looking since the switch to 3D, but it's extremely obvious that these were designed with cheap-ass happy meal toys in mind.
I can just imagine Rillaboom with a little switch on the back that makes him beat his drum, Cinderace kicking when you crank his arm, and Intelleon having a little hole in his finger with a button that shoots out a water blast represented by a piece of translucent blue plastic that you'll inevitably lose.

I'm talking about the fact that they took one of the easiest concepts possible, making a drummer out of an animal that already drums its chests, and then chose to go the awkward route of having it carry around a drum instead of simply naturally beating its chest. That, along with the need to give it hair, is a very forced way of getting across to the player that the design is meant to be a drummer when there wasn't any need to do so - and it is especially jarring when we have a design in the very same generation (Toxtricity) that is able to achieve a musician theme without the need of an external object to push its concept.

Rillaboom would be a lot less awkward if it used the drum sticks on its chest like a gorilla beating its chest, instead of having a drum to set down on the ground

This. It’s basically because you’re not a kid anymore so there’s no nostalgia ties. Now we have loads of people saying the gen 3/4 starters were the peak, because that’s what they grew up with. I remember when DP was coming out people were saying the designs were trash, only for a decade or so later to hearing how it was “the last good gen for designs”

If gen 2’s starters came out today they’d be torn to shreds for being too boring or something.

This. And while I don't think gen 5's designs are bad (not all of them, but there are a few stinkers just like every other gen), they're definitely a big departure from the previous gens, so I could see why people wouldn't like them if they hate change.
Gen 6 is the first time, at least in my opinion, that the stinkers outweighed the good designs, and it's only gotten worse since.

Hot take since I haven't played Sw/Sh.

Rillaboom is fine, it actually looks like a Gen 2-4 Pokemon. Cinderace is a little too nu-Pokemon and anthro for my tastes but the design itself is ok. Inceleon is a mess, the line feels like three different themes mixed together.

All I can say is that the standard for Pokemon has drastically declined.
