Reminder Wartortle was a separate turtle-mon from the Squirtle line, and would've had its own 2 stage family.

You mean Blastoise.

Blastoise was only a 2 stage line consists of baby Blastoise and Blastoise, while Squirtle had Wartortle and Totartle.

It was Squirtle -> Wartortle -> betamon and betamon -> Blastoise.

The beta rom only had backsprites (that were in the missingno slots), but here they are.

Any front sprites or art are fan estimations.

Are Blastoise really meant to be a tortoise in the original RB? It ressemble an hippo and don't appear to have a shell.

It always bugged me that it gained a wavy tail then lost it again.

I wouldn't say I prefer Wartortle 3 over Blastoise (certainly not for Box art to compete with Charizard), but I'm glad that thing nagging at me over the years was finally answered, and it did originally have a wavy tail too.

It does have a shell, it's just in classic gen 1 fashion the backsprite looks weird.

It has a round, smooth shell with a white collar (Think Buzzy Beetle from Mario), the two notch things on it are what will be the guns, and it has a chubbier baby-ish head, with a bubble coming from the side of its mouth.

Blastoise was actually one of the first pokemon conceptualized. Squirtle and Wartortle were designed later when they decided they needed a trio for starters. My guess is they didn't want to have 2 turtle lines so they consolidated them into the line we have today.

Gen 1 was full of kaiju fandesigns which tend to be hybrid monsters in the first place so being a hippo/gorilla/tortoise makes sense as a gameramon
