I always hc that Ethan/Gold mainly became a breeder and less of a trainer. Not sure why but it just seemed fitting for him.

I headcanon GSC Ethan/Gold being a gym leader, while HGSS Ethan/Gold becomes a breeder or professor, maybe working with Elm in particular.

Probably because the Lyra/Ethan's grandparents are breeders depending on which gender you pick and the whole Togepi situation

I headcanon that they're teenagers or young adults, not because I want to but because I didn't know they were supposed to be literal kids until like gen6. The artstyle always made them look older to me and they're going off alone on adventures so it makes more sense to me.
