>>43010891Not totally fair to put the Spaceworld sprites there considering they had multiple sprite artists. Many of those Spaceworld sprites also have been edited to more closely match the palettes of their evolutions.
>>43012894I believe that Ken Sugimori did most, if not all of the sprites for Gen II. You can see several distinct styles in the RGB and Spaceworld demo sprites. As an example, Spaceworld Houndoom looks closer in style to something like RG Charizard. Sugimori's style with sprites often uses a dithering effect for highlighted areas to more naturally convey light. Just look at Victreebel's leaves in the OP image. Gold and Silver still had the same four shade limitation that Gen I had (white, black, and two shades). The difference with the GBC was that the two "color" shades didn't need to be from the same palette, so you could have red + green on Weepinbell or yellow + red for Rapidash. It didn't have to be white/light/dark/black (or white/light [color]/dark [color]/black for the SGB). But Sugimori's dithering makes it appear like there are more colors than there actually are. Looking at Victreebel again, its body appears to have two shades of green that are different to the two shades on its leaves. But it's actually just good dithering with one shade of green and white.
You can usually tell which sprites Sugimori did in Gen I by how good they look. RG Mewtwo was definitely him. Though some sprites were clearly made years apart like RG Blastoise and RG Mewtwo, and the experience shows.
