All the advertising goes to Bulbasaur and Charmander. No one thinks Squirtle is the canon choice, all media shows Red choosing either Bulbasaur or Charmander. Which means Blastoise is either never picked at all or is a jobber losing to Charizard.

I doubt it. Who ACTUALLY is a huge fan of Electrode, Vileplume, Venomoth, Seaking, Seadra, etc. ? Some of their prevos are more loved than them
