Hey cool, decent advice and feedback instead of a dumpster fire thread, nice!
>pokémon are JRPG monsters based off of Japanese mythology and pop culture.>It’s a Japanese series, so you get lots of mons based on media styles and tropes. Mecha, kaiju, tokusatsu, etc. like fuck, Staryu is Ultraman-inspired.
This is true, although having grown up a big nerd for kaiju, ultraman and youkai I feel like they've moved away from those motifs ever since Gen 5. They still use them, and you're right that I neglected them totally, but I've wondered if Yo-kai watch caused them to deliberately avoid Pokemon that are "too Japanese" since we almost haven't had a youkai themed one since then, unless Frosmoth is another yuki-onna.
>>43016529Aw, I should've thought of Psyduck with Unown for eyes instead of just Psyduck with an Unown on top, that is an adorable visual.
I wish Slowbro-like symbiotic pairs had been one of their traditions for every generation; they almost did with Mantine and Remoraid and I still don't know why they dropped it from the design.
>DuraludonI actually do feel like I might have been a little generous with Duraludon.
>most pokémon are supposed to represent their gameplay function visually. ill try to pull up tajiri's article about monster design in a bit I think I remember him saying this, but I have a hard time seeing it myself other than the obvious "chunky pokemon are tanks, healers look gentle, sweepers look mean" kind of stuff. If anyone's still ever reading or responding to this what are some deeper examples than that I could consider? It might be something I consistently overlook when reviewing, too.
