He's actually been mostly hands-off for about a couple of decades now. Takashi Tezuka's in charge of 2-D Mario, Yoshiaki Koizumi handles 3-D Mario, and Kensuke Tanabe fucks up Paper Mario. Miyamoto just shares feedback when asked.
