Some stores intentionally rig the cards so you're either endlessly buying packs or buying the cards online, the latter of which children had a tough time understanding back in the day.

Pack weighing was definitely a thing back in the day, I wouldn't surprised if a lot of kids pulled shit because some jackass collector came in when they restocked and bought all the good packs.

I bought a base set box in 2011/12 and pulled basically everything I couldn't and wish I did when I was a child. Rare trainer cards was a mistake.

Be happy Pokémon cards came around in 1999. Early MtG packs had partially transparent wrappers so all the good cards (read: Power 9) were already taken by store owners sifting through packs or kids holding them up to the light in the stores before buying one. They didn’t switch to opaque, foil packs with Ice Age in 1995.
