We know they are often chosen as partners in that universe, but it is also established that the relationship between Humans and Pokémon is different there. They don't keep them in Pokéballs, for instance, but the main difference is that one Pokémon, e.g. Poipole, is SHARED between multiple people, rather than having a single trainer.
