With video games' reliance on graphics and engines, the ageing of both is far more noticeable (and as years pass it gets harder and harder to replay old out-of-print games). A remake, keeping true to the core elements of the game, but updating it to allow it to be played on modern kit means people are more receptive to them.
Of course, this only goes as far as how far the devs are willing to go, if it's nothing but a lazy port into better graphics and fuck all else, it won't get as much goodwill as something rebuilt from ground up and staying as true to the original experience as possible.
