Like 85% of Gen II Pokémon can be obtained before Kanto.

Exceptions are
>Slugma/Magcargo (except in HGSS)
>Houndour/Houndoom (except in HGSS)
>Murkrow (except in HGSS)
>Pichu (except in Crystal)
>Cleffa (except in Crystal)
>Sneasel (except in Crystal)
>Porygon2 (the trade evolution isn't limited to the region)
>Elekid (except in Crystal)
>Blissey (unless you transfer Chansey from Gen I)
>Larvitar/Pupitar/Tyranitar (still technically Johto)

Plus you can find all sorts of Gen I Pokémon in Johto that were extremely limited in Gen I like Farfetch'd, Jynx, or Lickitung. You can even breed and get multiples of starters and special Pokémon like Eevee when they were finite before.

CAN be but doesn't the average player is ever going to see them, and even then for most of them you have to do something really specific or tedious to find them.

Johto is pretty diverse, I don't know if everyone ends up with the same team.
I know everyone used Typhlosion and Ampharos once but I don't know beyond that.

Despite what recent practices by Game Freak might have you thinking, consumers aren't obligated to experience every last piece of content in a game and developers don't have to dumb down the game design so that everyone will have an identical experience and find the same stuff. I heard about Lapras in Union Cave as a rumor when I was a kid. Finding it on a Friday was so cool. I think that if the game forced you to encounter it like HGSS forces you to encounter Ho-Oh or Lugia, it would feel a lot less special. I found Lugia on my own as a kid because I CHOSE to explore the Whirl Islands. These experiences are special to me because not everyone will have them. Just like I know that kids who accidentally found Dunsparce will think about how cool it was to have a secret Pokémon that practically nobody knew about. Do I feel regret that I didn't find Dunsparce as a kid? Of course not. I could try and find it if I played again. There are autists here who breed for 6 IV correct Nature HA Pokémon for prolonged periods of time, a 1% encounter is fuck all compared to that.

I see these same retarded arguments over and over again and I still don't feel the urge to give a shit in either direction. Johto had retarded distribution but since I wasn't a braindead toddler I could still find pretty much anything I wanted with ease and still had more fun than I did in most subsequent games, I assume most other people had a similar experience judging by GSC/HGSS' overall success and status within the series.

A mandatory Shiny is fine. The Shiny Gyarados is less valuable than even a Shiny Magikarp because everyone will get a Shiny Gyarados. And it was better to use it over something like Pikachu because the Shiny coloration was strikingly different, which is a way of teaching players that Shiny Pokémon now exist. I think it should have been an iconic old Pokémon because a Shiny new Pokémon that acts as a mandatory encounter won't have the same affect. They'll just think that it's the normal coloration if they haven't seen it before or weren't paying that much attention. But the Red Gyarados conveys everything it needs to without devaluing a newer Pokémon.

But I somehow ended up with Skarmory, Slowking, Politoed, and Scizor on my team as a kid and I thought they were all really cool even if I didn't get them until late in the game. I had Pokémon Stadium 2 and SuperCheats and friends and family that I could trade with and hear rumors from. The first email I ever tried sending at the age of 7 was related to finding the Machine Part in Cerulean Gym. It's not like I stopped playing once I beat Red either. There was still stuff to discover in the game for me. I found Raikou/Entei/Suicune because I realized that even though I had lost Rock Smash, it must have been a TM I could obtain again since they wouldn't permanently lock them off. I was finally able to enter the Tin Tower after talking to an NPC in Pewter City. I found Smeargle on my own after leaving the hidden exit in Union Cave. While I had outside help with certain things, I figured out a lot on my own too. Never got another starter or any of the Gen I exclusive Pokémon, but I made do.

The Pokémon I valued the most in my copy of Ruby as a kid were the ones I thought most kids wouldn't have. Flygon, Wailord, Glalie, Shedinja, etc.

I dunno, probably breeding and shiny hunting and day/night cycles and color graphics and new places to explore and tons of other new things the games also introduced beside an assortment of beady eyed mid-route shitmons you were going to catch one of to complete your dex and then spend the rest of your playthrough running away from thereafter. I'll never understand the kind of autistic simp that only cares about dex size/distribution in a new game and literally nothing else, hell they're probably the main reason these games have been held back for so long with such low standards.

My team in Gold usually consisted of Chikorita, Phanpy, Crobat/Haunter, Ampharos, Red Gyarados and fucking Pidgeot.
Not sure why, because i played the game a lot of times and i always liked to have a pidgey in my team,i would usually just switch starters and maybe phanpy for togetic

The latest time i played crystal,my team was Dragonite, Heracross, Ninetales, Pikachu, Chikorita and Togetic.
It honestly wasn't a fun run.

When Johto came out they were trying to make Pokemon worlds a realistic place full of real animals and an actual eco system. Now pokemon is a theme park ride that sells you anime plushies and offers you no sense of adventure or personal journey. Every play through is not supposed to be identical, but supposed to offer you different ones using different mechanics. Some people would go through route 1 at night and others wouldn't, those who did might see an owl. Some would headbutt trees and others wouldn't. A lot of the fixed stuff is there to show off new mechanics like the shiny gyrados was and Togepi in the egg. It introduces players to the mechanic as a form of tutorial. If you chose to use the red gyrados for your full play through then you did, a lot of others didn't.

I agree Johtomon distribution is quite fucked up though, having Slugma in Kanto is just nonsense (not that I would've used it).
It irks me that Dratini is given to you over Larvitar or just that you can find Dratini before Kanto but not Larvitar.
And taking away Mareep from Crystal was huge bullshit.
Anyway, I managed to have a team of only Johtomon in my recent Crystal run:

Same goes for when I played Crystal before that. I went out of my way to get the rare shit like Sneasel and Xatu and Skarmory just for the sake of having them.

Everything else was stuff I remember seeing once in a route or a cave, going “WOW WHAT IS THAT” and then spending hours trying to encounter it again. Or stuff in hidden locations.

Scarcity makes Pokemon more valuable, and Pokemon is a collecting game. Pic related was like a breath of fresh air after pretty much every Pokemon being right out in the open since gen 5 or so.

Mareanie was the only justified SOS-exclusive encounter. And for what it’s worth it’s one of the best encounter methods pokemon has ever had. It doesn’t make up for the fact that SOS chaining is a chore though.

My last playthrough of Crystal was on my 3ds my team was Feraligatr, Tyranitar, Dragonite, Red Gyrados, Snorlax and Arcanine. I would have liked to have used a Steelix or Scizor but had no one to do trade evolutions with. But yeah, 4/6 of my team were kanto mons but I don't think that's a bad thing. Gen 2 is still a lot of fun to play for me.
