it's not got much going for it and is pretty bland, you can find other designs that are cuter/prettier and just as simple in Gen 2 alone
also people who hate it because Bayleef lead them into thinking it would go in another direction

Creators got lazy with it's design, and it's moveset was terrible. It's only real role was a dual screen setter, but it had shit stats to be useful in that. It didn't have leech seed so it couldn't exploit toxic seed like in Gen I. Victreebel, Vileplume or Bellossom were better options for grass types and could be found early. Design wise they wanted to dial everything back because Venasaur had too much going on to the point that the artists hated having to draw it. The first gyms are flying and bug making it even more difficult to try and start out with. As well many of the starting trainers are using bug and flying types. So if you pick it as your starter you're more than likely to have it taking a backseat in your party for the first quarter of the game, in a game where exp isn't all that easy to come by.

None of which were really an issue in GSC. Falkner’s Pokémon were low leveled to the point where you can muscle past them and none of Bugsy’s Pokémon had any worthwhile Bug type moves to threaten it. People love to has this up as an issue when it really wasn’t

Why not run screens, Meganium's movepool allows for open space.
Also Pryce's mons are slow as hell and you can definitely oneshot all his mons before they use an ice move on it. Retards who complain about Meganium having a hard time against Pryce has literally never used one to begin with.
Especially if you're playing HGSS when it gets petal dance.

It’s designed as a Grass-type defensive cleric, with no offensive capability. That just doesn’t work, because Grass has a ridiculous 5 weaknesses. If it got Thick Fat, like Mega Venusaur, it could negate two of the most common ones and perhaps be usable, but it doesn’t, so it’s fucked.

That's not dificult, and even then Meganium is the worst starter, early game is full of poison, bug and flying type. The first dungeon of the game, sprout tower is the perfect exemple, even Totodile is better here because even if it's weak to grass it's stab isn't resisted by the gastly and hoothoot you find here and the bellsprout only resist water when they have a double resistance to grass.Also 6 of the 8 gym leaders are specialised in a type that either resist and/or is super effective against grass and the for the two other only one has a single pokémon weak to grass

If you suck at the game, sure. I played both classic and Gen 4 Jhoto with each starter at least once and I had no issues with Meganium. Was it the worst of the bunch? Yeah, but it isn't useless. If anything, it was the most fun to use.

I agree that it's one of worst starters ingame though, it's a supportive pokemon so it didn't really learn many offensive moves from level up. Basically the hard mode for Johto games.

Which would only be true for Misty because Brock’s Pokémon don’t even have any Rock moves in RBY, so you can take advantage of their bad special stats. Misty is the one who’s actually hard

You don’t even have to grind for the first gym at all, except if you have multiple Pokémon, in which case you really shouldn’t have trouble. And you would be at a high enough level so that the Pecks and Gusts won’t be an issue.

Probably an understatement seeing as aside from setting up screens the only thing it can do is use razorleaf till you get to the E4 or Kanto.

HGSS fixes a lot of the problems though compared to how unbalanced GSC was. The problem with GSC Meganium was more that it just wasn't fun to use at all. It was also just a worse option compared to the other grass pokemon you could grab.

The requirement for Fairy type is that it either be or be based on a literal fairy, a fey, a trickster, a creature of folklore or mythos, is related to our concept of magic, or at the very least a pun on fairies.
There are actually very few Fairy types who are fairies ONLY because they're cute and girly. An overwhelming majority of them are based on or are connected to the concepts listed above.
Meganium isn't explicitly cute/girly and does not fall under any of those concepts, so a Fairy typing would only feel shoehorned to make it more special, like Galar Weezing.

It is a massive downgrade from Bayleef's design. Also Feraligatr exists.
It just doesn't have enough going for it.

You are saying that like meganium is actually a shitmon. It doesn't have lowest base stats, it doesn't have the worst type (according to some retards here). It is just mediocre. It can attack alright if you made it a sweeper by EV training it properly in game. Also like they say, if you dual screen shit's alright as well for that. The problem is that it doesn't really fill any niche it is just a mediocre pokemon which can easily be left behind for something better.

Nobody played Gen 2 competitive until years later. When people say competitive, they mean 3 and onwards since that's when both doubles and Smogon started gaining traction.

The line had a good motif going. Red eyes, nice head leaf, a simple but elegant design. One would expect Meganium to follow that much at least, yet alas, no leaf.

A meganium is just a bald bayleef that just so happened to sprout a flower around its neck. With meganium, there is something missing from the design. If it had some continuation of the head leaf motif, I wouldn't mind it so much. Yet it sticks out like a sore thumb, bare without said leaf to cover its scalp. Might be a small detail, but an important one that is absent in the third evolution.
