So as you know, yes, Yeti crabs are a real animal, and like Crabominable they have big long arms and “fur.” Crabominable takes the pre-established land crab idea (since Crabrawler is a coconut crab) and runs with it, making it a literal yeti crab. That’s why it has those weird fist-like pinchers and the gorilla chest, it’s a yeti! Those claws aren’t just meant for fists though, concept art shows how it actually smashes them into the ground, creating markings that actually look more like footprints. This ties back to how it’s a cryptid type creature; it lives atop snowy mountains and makes these “footprints” all over the place, just like a real yeti. Mysterious. And yet it still manages to be a crab.
There’s more though. A pokedex entry describes why crabrawler even took this direction.
>It aimed for the top but got lost and ended up on a snowy mountain. Being forced to endure the cold, this Pokémon evolved and grew fur.Basically, it shouldn’t. Crabominable is more of a mutation of Crabrawler that go to far with their training and get lost in the cold. It’s almost more like a regional evolution within its own region, like if Mine Jr. evolved straight into Mr. Rime. Crabrawler are just Crabrawler, but if forced to survive the cold they will adapt and become Crabominable.
Other things its design possibly pulls from is how since it got lost, maybe it got hit on the head or just lost its mind which explains why its retarded. Could also be seen as a boxer or coach retiring and letting themselves go. It’s egg-shape and plated features are very reminiscent of the back of an actual yeti crab. And finally, more of a stretch but, its hair could have meant to resemble something like a straw hat
