The main characters still wanted to live despite knowing how bleak their world is because of all the good times they shared, while the main antagonists gave in to their despair and wanted to let Bittercold wipe the slate clean. The story was about overcoming despair and depression with hope and the will to live.
Overall, I understand that Gates had wasted potential, and I'm not saying it's story was perfectly made. Some extra episodes would've been great, especially for Hydreigon, Munna, Keldeo and Virizion(maybe even Terrakion and Cobalion). Victini could played a important role and Kyurem could've been explored more. But in my opinion, what we got was a neat story about despair and hope.
IMO, Gate's twist was better than Sky's. Did people really thought Dusknoir wasn't evil while Grovyle was?
