It can help prolong development/support cycles, reduce pointless extra workload that would come with shipping an entirely new game instead of just downloadable content, and it gives Game Freak less of an excuse to pay-gate basic QoL shit typical of third versions that can just as easily be delivered with a patch. Plus you can enjoy the games sooner without worrying about having to play them all over again just to experience minor content updates/changes, or if you wait you can just pick up a used copy for $20 in a year and then pick up the pass and it still ends up being cheaper.
