Why do people pretend pokemon are not supposed to be based on animals? There have been animal pokemon since gen 1, more than half of the kanto pokedex are not ambiguous monsters. Charizard is just a fire dragon, things like electrode or muk are just simple shapes with a face on them. The only ambiguous creatures are things like venusaur, nidoking or pikachu, which are only a mix of multiple animals.
What makes new pokemon designs bad is not the animal mindset, there have been bad pokemon every generation, what makes the new ones more unattractive is the fact that they are new and that they are trying to make them more goofy because apparently things like a-exeggutor or esicue are really attractive to twitter/reddit and act as free advertising for the pokemon company.
