>>43108583As someone who has a Psychic Trainer character I use for RPG's, it's probably a bit of both. Despite Pokemon being "monstrous" having friends who share your abilities makes you feel less different and monstrous. Having someone to telepathically communicate with in confidence, someone to help you learn how to precisely use telekinesis, someone to understand when you can see or sense things others can't. You know that if you lose control, a caring Pokemon who might have much more natural affinity for these abilities for you will keep you from causing damage. That's what the good Psychics should keep in mind, anyway. Obviously anime Sabrina lost herself to negative emotions and her Kadabra was not strong enough or willing to rein her in and knock some sense into her. But that evolution line is a little more mystical/above petty concerns than most, so it was not the best candidate in the first place.
You ever seen/read Mob Psycho? I feel like that's a good representation for what it must be like to grow up and hopefully mature as an esper. Ideally you have a cool-headed and practical mentor like Mob's teacher to teach him right from wrong.
Oh, but Psychics also catch non Psychic types too....if they are cool or cute or whatever. Who can resist owning a snuggly Vulpix??
