gen 7 was actually better about this most of the time. it was either a trial gate put in place to make you complete the current trial or a proper physical obstruction, rather than some cunt standing in front of a door

they were terrible, but it's not like adding HMs would've made them good. fuck, they literally had strength puzzles blocking off legendaries just like KANTOOOOOO, via the tapu temples
HMs don't actually add anything other than a way to limit your team/ move selection. they can and do reward backtracking without HMs. i haven't posted LGPE but im told they keep all the HM blockades intact, just without wasting a move slot
