Because the other main series games are RPGs. Sun & Moon is a visual novel.

Because that's a game from generation 7, 2 generations in after starting to add real new weird mechanics, and leaving the classic feeling behind. Xy black whito and shieldo sword feel like spin offs as well

I don't see why that's a bad thing, though. Spinoffs have been better than main series games for a good 10 years now.
