Who exactly is this show aimed for? There's no way this can be KANTOOOO nostalgia pandering besides the Kanto name and the Pokemon because that seems really lackluster. Why couldn't they put the Sakuragi Base in Galar?

I mean, fuck the main Charizard of this show is one that lives in Galar.

Because of the cyclical reintroduction of kanto/gen 1 content in the franchise, even little kids love kanto shit.
My nephew gravitates towards gen 1 stuff without even realizing it's gen 1, because there's so much merch of those Pokemon, and their so present in media.

I think they made a genuine mistake by not having at least some of the current game characters are regular characters. That kind of cross promotion is part of why a lot of the Alola characters are so popular. People who want to see more of them watch the anime, people who like them in the anime may become interested in the games.

I feel the Pokemon Go thing is a mere excuse to don't repeat another season of eternal walking forest simulator (despite the result ended up in a faggot who do nothing but throw some balls) yet they're forced to promote Gen 8 somehow (aka stuff like the stupid rabbit) despite the lack of interest. Even this thing about the "worldwide tournament" independent of the pokemon leagues sounds pretty random. It's like they have no idea of what make now, even I saw tweets of official animators wanting go back to the SM formula despite they're working in new things for PM.

Its for new fans, specifically Go players.

The old characters aren't in because Go players don't know them. The show isn't in Galar because Go doesn't have Galar stuff in it yet.

The show is KANTOOOOOOOOO because that's what Go players know.

The anime can be credited for a lot of game characters popularity like Brock, Misty, May, Dawn, and Serena. It can even make the dislike of the anime portrayals extend to the game characters like the case with Iris.

The thing about the "eternal forest walking" is that because they wanted to have the entire season last from the beginning of the generation to the end they had to stretch out Ash getting 8 gym badges by filling it with those forest episodes so that the season could end by the time the next gen started. Kanto got around it by instead of stretching out the journey between cities even further once Gold and Silver were delayed they filed the time with the Orange Islands. They did get more material to work with between episodes to fill the gap between gym badges during advanced and onward with contests and new evil teams but the fact that they committed so hard to sticking to one region hurt Sinnoh in particular since they could have easily wrapped the season up earlier and have the gang travel through Johto or the battle zone for the Battle Frontier.
