Grass is a good type because of a combination of uncommon resistances, immunity to powder moves, good suport moves that aren't widely distributed outside of the type and offensively you can hit super effectively ground and water two types that don't have a lot of other weaknesses. Grass fill a niche that no other type can fill.

Speaking of offensive usage, I wish it weren't a collection of signature moves. There are like three common fairy type attacks worth mentioning and that's just because moon blast is scarcely availiable.

Immunity to powder moves is nothing to praise about.
Literally all powder moves are dogshit terrible.
Electric is also a very uncommon offensive type, so flying pretty much does grass's job much better as a result.

Grass is good when added to something due to special interactions like grass/steel defensive or grass/flying offensive. Problem is mono-grasses are almost always screwed stat,movepool,and ability wise

But Ground isn't

The most common coverage type that's paired with Ground is Rock, which Flying is weak to.

Flying is good on offense, not defense.

Well fire is certainly an extremely good type.
