Ash actually used strategies in X/Y.
Pikachu damaged charizard with electric moves (which was retconned out in the next episode because fuck TPC changing the script to make Ash lose) then used a water mon against a fire one which lost by a fire move.
X/Y had a shitty rigged script but at least Ash actually used his brain not spamming 2 moves and won just to apolagize for XY fans.
if it wasn't for the backlash and negative reception of X/Y, Ash would have lost Alola league
