At least both started out strong, Harry Potter was a fun magical mystery series that got derailed by Voldemort's return and the books became generic shonen after the fourth. Likewise RBY and GSC started off with a neat premise of exploring the world while Team Rocket caused mischief, but derailed into pretentious anime plots the longer it went on until gen 8 decided to revert back and have no real plot despite having legendaries.
