Yeah, but his role's changed, he's no longer schlepping the gym challenge, he's made the step up to the big leagues (hell, his two catches already are an insanely powerful Gengar and a Dragonite, he's almost certainly getting a Lucario, the only question is what other fully-evolved pokémon is he going to add, because they won't be giving him any of the Galar starters)

Starters are just above average Pokemon that people grew fond of due to stockholm syndrome

Gengar, Dragonite, and Lucario (Mega) are top tier

notice he doesn't have a single basic type in that entire team. Ghost, Poison, Dragon, Flying, Steel, Fighting

with mime it's Psychic/Fairy. all he needs now is a Dark type

Pokemon-colored eggs were beautiful and adorable and now the generic ones are exactly that, generic. Some of them were always pretty consistent too like Pichu's, Elekid's, Igglybuff's, Eevee's, etc. etc.

Sorry, forgot to add to that, Game Freak initially came up with the idea of raid battles, but GO released first, as Game Freak were still working on Gen VII/VIII at the time.

The anime confirmed on multiple times they work with Game Freak in regards to what new shit's coming up (otherwise how the fuck could they have gotten Blaziken in in time to animate it for the Hoenn tease? Much less Game Freak designing their "not-Mega" frog as they wanted something to fight Megas with). they probably though of it in Gen II production, told the anime staff, delayed the game (hence it appearing in Orange Islands filler arc), then removed it as it was too much fucking effort to try and get working in a GB game.
