Why so much hatred towards waterways?

It was a lot of fun for me to embark on an adventure on the sea and surf to the bitter end, since the fifth generation the sea routes have dramatically decreased and this has contributed in making the games more boring and soulless.

I really like water routes, I find the caves full of Zubat and Geodude much more boring.

Caves are easier to explore because they have "rooms" and "corridors" while the sea is just a giant open field.

This is precisely the point, from the fifth generation onwards they have almost eliminated the marine routes by removing the pleasure of the exploration experience, the regions have become a mass of paths and meadows, extremely boring.

Usually there were not much things to do at them except for battling generic Swimmers and maybe finding an interesting cave. If the games took more advantage of diving perhaps the sea would be less boring to explore.

Hoenn goes to shit right after Lilycove. No one wants to fight that many water types, especially not with a fucking water gym at the end of it.

I loved them because of how open they were. Dive was one of my favorite mechanics too. But I can definitely see why spotting the same water types over and over in a big empty ocean would get boring and tedious. They need more islands, dive spots, hidden caves, (storms and water spouts?), add more flying types and varied types in general, etc. Something to make the routes feel worthy of actual traversal.

I like both equally, but only when you have something to do in them, like shipwrecks, diving, small islands or sandbars, etc. Caves are the same way, Mt.Moon is big and empty but late games had magnetic caves with electric types that were much better. I do agree that recent generations have killed water routes and suffered for it, especially gens 7 & 8, fuck that linear hallyway shit

Why are water routes somehow more interesting than caves? Either way you're getting the same three encounters. Caves could be a lot better but they still have a shit ton more visual variety than water routes.

How to fix waterways

Instead of the same old Tentacool/Wingull/Pelipper setup, add some more sluts. Maybe introduce more sea-faring, non-Water types like Stunfisk.

>Rest stops
Small island breaks with grassy spots, berry trees, and maybe a small shop to restock on supplies.

>Boats
Sometimes, small boats pass by. Interact with them, or just let them go. They have trainers of varying types, people who want to give you gifts, or sightseers who add a bit of flavor to the game. Maybe some of them are pirates, and they'll force you to battle with them.

>Diving
More diving spots, so you can avoid the wild encounters of the world above by going deep. There could also be interesting sights, like sunken ships or caves that lead to secret locations.

>Bigger routes
To compensate for all this extra stuff, the routes are bigger and have more nooks and crannies, giving you a lot to explore. Signs will tell you where to go, so you won't get overwhelmed.

this is the worst take i've ever heard. the two best cities in hoenn are right after, in mossdeep and sootopolis. that white rock, the mystery, coming up from the dive and seeing the white walls of sootopolis city for the first time, the regis, groudon vs kyogre cutscene, rayquaza tower, etc.

Here you have this really well put together landmass portion of the game that is just big enough for you to trek around and go back to different areas. They wanted to extend the game without ruining that, and the solution was giving you fly and setting you on the high seas. Dive to reach new and hidden areas, poke and prod wherever you can on these routes and you’ll be rewarded with items, battles and neat secluded islets and NPC dialogue. You need to explore to find a way to level up some Pokémon through shard trading also, which is something you’ve been waiting a long time for in RSE. Hoenn has so much to offer, and does it so beautifully.

Caves often have rare pokemon you can discover even among all the zubat and geodude, so you're always wondering what cool thing you might find in between all the chaff. Trainers in caves can be widely different and don't all just use rock types.

Water routes are 100% the same shit and nothing special ever pops up. Trainers on water routes use the same water pokemon you've seen dozens of times already.

The underwater grass routes were cool, but otherwise it's just all the same shit with no variety in visuals or gameplay.
