Pokemon regions have always been theme parks. The series has always relied on the anime to show what the regions are actually like in terms of scale.

Gen 5's layout was linear but I'd hardly call it a themepark. Aside from the big city you'd have no idea it was even supposed to be New York.

This is what went wrong. Sinnoh had deep lore and culture to the region and had decent biomes. Hoenn, even with all of it's water routes, was a great region with unique areas and towns that felt like you could live in them. I feel like in gens 5 and up they design pokemon and regions separately, but gens 1-4 had more synergy with pokemon and the environment

Johto unironically was. The tower, the burned down tower, the legendaries all based off of statues in parks, the radio tower, the naruto whirlpools, etc.

It was basically a checklist of “how many Kansai iconic spots can we put into the game” and it even ends on top of Mt. Fuji

Kalos might be an exception, although I agree it suffers from similar flaws as gen 5, it definitely had a beauty and personality of it's own

Because most people only have a superficial understanding of countries outside of their own.
The GF developers never lived in New York, France, Hawaii, or the UK.
I'm sure they at least went to those places, but they only understand them from a tourist's perspective, visiting all of the important landmarks in the span of a month tops as opposed to the decades they spent living in Japan.

The first four regions are done locally, but they still have local stereotypes and iconic locations and stuff outside of Kanto because that’s literally where most of the staff lives IRL.

All the Japan regions had a clear and distinct biome or theme that they stuck to rigorously and the regional dex reflected that, with Kanto having lots of poison and grass types, Hoenn with a lot of water types, Sinnoh with a lot of ice types.

Starting with Unova, Gamefreak felt the need to cram every single biome into the game so they feel less cohesive and much more artificial. Although I would say at least Unova has an excuse because of seasons.

This is exactly what I hoped for when people started meming about Kanto remakes on the Shitch a while back
