Always had a bunch of save issues with it and got Sapphire pretty soon after it, so it wasn't the one I played the most early on. Still ended up enjoying Gen 2 more than 3 as time went on and I revisited it.

Starting with Gen 1 does at least have the benefit of watching the Pokemon series progress in real time after spending significant amounts of time with all of the Gens as they were current. I think it gives you more context in general which allows you to judge the Gens more fairly. You have to admit that people who start with Gen 4 will have a fundamentally different experience playing Gen 2 than people who started with Gen 1 did. It helps you appreciate what changes were made and how the overall franchise was impacted while taking it as its own separate thing as opposed to a curiosity as an older part of a franchise that's "probably not worth playing".
