Why is Lucario a Steel Type? Shouldn't it just be a pure Fighting Type?

4th gen was where they started doing a lot of the "why is X Y type" mons, probably so they could start adding weird combinations.

it's cool bc it's based on anubis and boxing is believed to have originated in Egypt. the metal part still makes little sense I think it would've been better as ghost/fighting or dark/fighting type

I agree, but I think there is some Japanese lore explains why aura sphere is a fighting move instead of psychic.

I also think it is funny that bone rush is a ground type move but every portrayal of Lucario using bone rush in 3rd party games/media is him summoning an aura bone.

Hell why isn’t Kangaskhan Normal/Ground? It has the exact same body type as the Nidos and Rhydon, and it’s Giovanni’s ace in the first two fights. Dugtrio is so out of place visually in his final team too.

It’s ki/fighting spirit stuff. Look at like Dragon Ball or Street Fighter or whatever. Aura Sphere’s JP name is almost identical to Hadouken too.

To reinforce the ice-cold/hardness theme this Pokemon has, and Steel-type wasn't introduced yet so they chose Ice-type for the hardness.
>Lapras - Live in cold areas and can travel across icy seas
>Nidos
They have the drill theme with their typing now and they can dig underground with them. Also, Giovanni is a Ground-type specialist and the Nidos are two of his signature Pokemon.
>Gyarados
It's based on a flying koi kite.
>Golbat
Based on vampire bats which have toxic saliva.
>Psyduck
Its name is Koduck (small + duck) in Japanese. This Pokemon only has psychic powers when it has extreme headaches. It can't use those powers any other time.

exactly, which is why I find it interesting. Lucario uses bone rush as a fighting esque move but the mainline typing for bone rush is ground. I'm just nitpicking though.

Lapras living in cold areas wasn’t established until FRLG, and its crossing over icy seas wasn’t even mentioned until Fucking SWSH.

All you had to go off of in the original games was that it’s a nearly-extinct plesiosaur. Its connection to ice was totally arbitrary.

The Nidos are rabbits. They could dig underground since they were in their first stage.

Hardness was just rock type in gen 1, otherwise Golem and Rhydon would be ice type. Being ice cold is not mentioned anywhere about Cloyster, just that its shell repels bombs which is much more of a rock type thing.

It was given ice type because they wanted another ice type, not for any lore reason.

The chest spike and two hands spikes are symbolic. They mean it has a "heart and fists of steel".

Just the general idea of having an iron-hard will or steely resolve. It's meant to be heroic.
