Piers is possibly the best trainer in the region but not having godzilla on his team costs him that position. Despite that he refuses to use it because he's against it and his "punk ideals" mean more to him than success does.
Leon is fine the way he is. His designs crappy and could do with being paler and not wearing the stupid cape but everything else is fine. He acts like a pro soccer player does which is what he's based off of. When he loses he doesn't whine and be a bitch, he gets the battle tower together to get stronger and get everyone else stronger.
Instead of looking at Leon as the meme champion look at him as the defender of the realm. He experienced an apocalypse event and instead of walking off to shine rocks he dedicates his life to making the Galar region as strong as it can be in order to face other threats. He even shows it off earlier in the story when he tells the player not to engage in serious problems because it's his job as champion to deal with that shit. Bitching he's the strongest is also stupid because he's the only guy who regularly deals with fighting Godzilla. imagine you're the guy responsible for dealing with a rampaging dynamaxed gyrados trying to hyper beam an entire city. How strong would you need to be to deal with that if you were unable to dynamax yourself?
Leons only a mary sue if you're too retarded to understand his character. He's not a meme champ who always wins because he always wins. He's just top dog in a region with exceptionally powerful gimmicks. The game straight up tells you the dragon trainer and Piers are on par with Leon. His Charizard often takes big hits and comes back from them as you would expect from a charizard used to battling things 5 times it's size regularly.
