XY was aimed at teenegers who are slightly older than elementary kids (the main pokemon audience).
that's why they pushed a romance and the season felt more mature than usual, probably to mimic Naruto, but they returned to the mindless children cartoons in sun and moon and eliminated any kind of romance.
