Why is gen 3 so soulless?

Everything looks so fucking sterile. RSE's sprite looks sloppy and messy, FRLG's looks more competently done but bland and uninteresting. Art direction in these games is definitely lacking

Some were also just straight up wrong like Zangoose having purple claws instead of black and Salamence being dark blue with orange wings instead of light blue with red wings.

They look "bad" because they are meant to be on a GBA since the screen was so dark they had to lighten the sprites to compensate

Gen 3 does have a distinct look of sprite art growing pains; a number of RSE's Kanto Pokemon look like first drafts, probably because they could get away with it for their being absent on release. Felt like they mostly got the hang of it for DP and then blew the later games on more dynamic sprites.

You should include differences between DP, Pt, and HGSS for gen 4. Especially for HGSS, the sprite work could have considerable variance.
HGSS had really good color palettes in my personal opinion.

Zangoose makes much more sense with purple claws though. It matches Seviper’s scars, just as Seviper’s tail matches Zangoose’s scars.

They should have kept them purple in the art.

Gen 1 sprites have the most personality. In my opinion Haunter, Tentacruel and Mewtwo peaked here. I only really dislike Mr Mime and the Ponyta line. Even if you dislike the RB sprites, you might at least like the Yellow sprites which did a pretty good job copying the anime's designs.
Gen 4 sprites are really clean and polished. None of them really look too bad to me except Gligar.
Even if I like 3 the least I can at least say they animated a lot of the moves well.

Wrong. This is because you're looking at the raw graphics and not how the graphics would actually look like on a real GBA screen. GBA graphics are saturated to make up for how the original GBAs didn't backlights, so when you look at them in a real screen they don't look so weirdly colored.

Nowadays emulators have filters to recreate the proper look. You should try it out.

Some of these sprites are really silly looking but that Haunter is still my favourite, I love that look for it.

In terms of animations I really like Crystals the most

This style of animation was definitely the best. No odd stretching of the sprites, just an action pose. I don’t really hate BW’s distorted idle animations, but I do think they would’ve been much better had they been animated statically like this.
