Since it transmits easily and can place more strain on a body with an existing conditions (like hypertension, which is super common in America), it can become deadly in enough cases that we dont really have the infrastructure or equipment to deal with it. This means there is a risk of the hospitals being overwhelmed. If that happens then people who have other conditions that can't be treated will also die unnecessarily. It's fatality rate is high enough that if it sweeps through the USA unabated, literally millions of people could die. That's why we are freaking out.
