Like, Lillie shows up in SM and turns what was supposed to be your grand island adventure into a glorified escort mission featuring her shitty family drama while simultaneously managing to have next to no agency on her own. Lysandre is introduced and he's immediately wanting to kill untold millions due to a vaguely defined problem that's only an issue in Kalos because of the gaggle of dipshits that he himself assembled. Zinnia is presented as a sympathetic character when she commits more acts of evil than any other character in the mainline games, Ghetsis included, and gets off scott-free for her crimes. And Tierno had no personality outside of dancing yet got a team of three Pokemon with less than seven moves between them that barely had anything to do with dancing.
From what I'm reading about Leon, I'd say he's a better Champion than Diantha for a) not being a complete afterthought and b) actually being someone you want to humiliate on a grand stage.
