Gens 2-5 are fun and every game (except for RS and DP) are amazing by adding more mechanics (natures, held items, abilities, Physical/Special Split), minigames (Secret Bases, Contests, more Game Corner, Pokeathlon, Underground), battle facilities (Battle Frontier, PWT), and postgames, as well as a nice difficulty, and an increasingly improving and expanding story.
Gen 6 and 7 are objectively downgrades from the previous generations and each of them fails where the other one excels (XY did communication and exploration better, but SM did story and difficulty better, for example), but together they make pretty good games, just not as good as their DS counterparts. Also, ORAS existed.
Gen 8 takes the worst of each generation and puts it together (uncomplete Pokedex, handholding, empty region, no difficulty, short games, bad graphics, tedious online features, cut features, lack of minigames and battle facilities, MEMES AND PORN, Kanto pandering) while adding a pretty interesting but unpolished feature (wild area) and a terrible new roster and it's even more expensive just because its on Switch.
