If we ever get a total overhaul of the battle system, what would you want the new one to be like? Big changes, small changes? Would you want to keep things like megas, z moves, dynamax etc? Would you change how typing and abilities work?

Pokemon's battle system is shit and does not fit the world Pokemon is trying to convey at all.

There's a huge disconnect between the in-game battles and what Pokemon battles are actually like.

I think something like mega Man Battle Network would work as a blend of menus and talk time do you still have options like move, bag, run, pkmn, but also more control.

What they do need to do is to totally rework speed so it's not the stat that matters for most of the time and also do something with BSTs, legendaries and overall ditch the autistic contingency where mon is set in fucking stone once it's done and only changes it will ever get is maybe expanded moveset

They already said in the GameInformer interview that for Sword and Shield they tried to do real time battles, similar to what Level-5 did with YW4 but it didn’t work/wasn’t fun

They are never changing the core battle system

Remove any damage related RNG.
Buff HP across the board enough to almost completely eliminate OHKOs when no stat boosts are in play.

No damage rolls.
Crits and misses can stay, but let the comparatively low-power moves be consistent and reliable so you have to decide whether to go for a low power move which definitely KO's some mons, or a high power move that'll KO way more mons if it hits.
And maybe revamp the typing system.

Keep it turn based but just make it feel a bit more dynamic and action-filled. Smoother animations, reduction of pointless text boxes and transitions. Get rid of IVs and EVs and replace them with better, more fleshed out mechanics that add depth to strategy instead of objective handicaps with only one perfect distribution.

They shouldn't be removed entirely, but they should be shortened on both ends so players can predict on a much more expected value

But add so many almost every non legendary line has one.

Makes them less swingy

>Innate abilities
Every pokemon has 2 abilities. 1 ability is innate to all pokemon of a certain species, the other ability is a choice like it is currently. That way there is more nuance with pokemon that have negative or minor abilities. In game, they could even make some abilities non combat based so a pokemon could offer party utility without entirely losing battle abilities.

>Contribution from the bench
Give some pokemon minor means of interacting with the battle even when switched out. Either passively or actively. It could add a new layer of depth to gameplay and teambuilding. Think of it kind of how some characters in gacha games passively buff your entire party just for being chosen on the team.
