the actual rule in english is that you use the masculine form if you don't know the gender. it would be he/him, never them

Both of these articles acknowledge that "he" is technically correct, however they're arguing that that should no longer be the case and that it's been gradually shifting to become "they" in recent years. So we're kind of both correct, everybody wins

I imagine it's only the English purists who push that "they" isn't correct. I've never seen someone say it's incorrect but I constantly see people being corrected for using "him". Shit's basically extinct nowadays

i'd say about 10 years ago, give or take. my sister told me that a professor recently corrected her for using the masculine form and told her that it should be "they". so maybe that's what they're pushing for in schools now, who knows
