The original GBA did not have a backlit screen so GF had to use oversaturated colors to make the sprites easier to see.

Colors are oversaturated on purpose because the GBA had no backlight. They look good on the intended hardware. You would know that if you weren't a zoomer.

That's probably because those are the RS sprites and you didn't trade. FRLG redid Kantomons and Teddiursa.

Worst are the RS backsprites for some returning mons that are just blown up GSC sprites

That is the Gba you can have one or the other but you can't really have both. Bringing up Golden Sun as away of saying no excuse is retarded because even though they pushed it's limits quite hard and got some amazing results for the towns and dungeons. The battle models were absolutely painful on eyes at times.

Sword of Mana's nice too, but I think it leans on the "mostly good backgrounds, mediocre sprites" thing. Like the monsters are fine, it's just the playable characters the look like they need work

Some face portraits were kinda uncanny valley-ish too, that's what really bothered me when looking at the game

Try playing the fan translation of Magical Vacation. It's one of the best looking games ever made, which is a miracle considering it's on the GBA. I forget it's connection to Legend if Mana but it's either the director or artist.
